Chemical Properties: Needle-like crystals. Melting point 95-97℃, boiling point 296℃, 153℃ (0.67kPa), relative density 1.099 (109℃), refractive index 1.5348. Soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, and benzene; slightly soluble in water; insoluble in petroleum ether.
Uses: 3-Hydroxyacetophenone can be used in organic synthesis and is an intermediate in the drug phenylephrine.
Production Method: Obtained by reacting m-aminoacetophenone with sodium nitrite. Water and concentrated sulfuric acid are added to a reaction vessel, and m-aminoacetophenone is added while stirring. Then, an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite is added dropwise while cooling, maintaining the temperature at 8-10℃. After the addition is complete, the temperature is slowly raised to above 90℃, and the reaction is continued with stirring for 1 hour. The solid precipitates upon cooling, is filtered, and the crude product is recrystallized from hot water to obtain m-hydroxyacetophenone. Yield: 65%.
