Physicochemical Properties: Triethylsilane appears as a colorless or light brown oily liquid; soluble in most polar organic solvents, frequently used in CH2Cl2; density 0.728 g/mL (25°C), boiling point 107-108°C, flash point -39°C. Stability: 1. In alkaline water, the Si-H bonds within the molecule break, releasing hydrogen gas and forming triethylsilanol. It reacts with alkyllithium, where the hydrogen atoms in the Si-H bonds are replaced by alkyl groups. It reacts with alkoxylithium to form triethylalkoxysilane. In the presence of aluminum trichloride, it reacts with hydrogen chloride to form triethylchlorosilane. It can undergo addition reactions with alkenes under platinum catalysts. 2. It is sensitive to acids, alkalis, and moisture; contact with moisture releases hydrogen gas. Storage under dry conditions and use in a fume hood are recommended. Reducing Properties: While most reduction reactions occur in alkaline environments, triethylsilanes ability to function as a reducing agent in acidic environments such as TFA is its most notable characteristic. It can be used for the reduction of acetals or the elimination of terminal alkoxy groups in sugars. Additionally, it can be used in silylation addition reactions with transition metal catalysts.

Uses: Triethylsilane (Et3SiH) is a common reducing agent, mainly used in the synthesis of organosilicones. Applications: Multifunctional reducing agent; used in the study of 2-chromoalkanol reduction reactions; used for the synthesis of trialkyl hydrides of alkylsilanes via the hydrosilylation of alkenes, with cis-selectivity observed with TES; synthesis of a Nav1.7 spiro-hydroxyindole inhibitor for pain treatment; used in redox-initiated cationic polymerization reactions; used in the Beckmann rearrangement of cyclododecanone oximes; used in the regioselective reductive coupling reaction of propadiene with enones; used as a reactivation catalyst after styrene-catalyzed polymerization; used in studies predicting the flash point of organosilicones.
