Flunic acid (CAS number: 38677-85-9) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and its meglumine salt form (CAS number: 4394-00-7) is the main active ingredient in veterinary formulations. The chemical name is 2- [[2-methyl-3- (trifluoromethyl) phenyl] amino] nicotinic acid, which contains trifluoromethyl and nicotinic acid groups in its structure that endow it with potent cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitory activity. This drug is widely used in the veterinary field for analgesic and antipyretic treatment of large animals such as horses and cows. Its meglumine salt form significantly improves water solubility (>50mg/mL), making it easy to administer by injection. As one of the few NSAIDs approved for use in food animals, fluazuronic acid is metabolized in the body into active metabolites such as 5-hydroxyfluazuronic acid, with a long elimination half-life (3-5 hours for Mayo and about 8 hours for cattle).
