Introduction
Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) is one of the three most widely used matrix resin materials in resin-based composites. It possesses excellent comprehensive properties, including good processability, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and electronic insulation properties, making it widely used in automotive components, electrical engineering, and the chemical industry.
Preparation
Biomass-based dicarboxylic acid unsaturated polyester resins: Dai et al. synthesized a series of bio-based unsaturated polyesters derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), itaconic acid (IA), succinic acid (SA), and 1,3-propanediol (PD) through direct condensation polymerization, and cured them using the bio-based non-volatile reactive diluent guaiacol methacrylate. The results showed that the thermal properties, flexural strength, and modulus of the cured UPRs were significantly improved after the introduction of FDCA; the temperature at which 5 wt% of thermal weight loss occurred reached 330℃, and the flexural strength and modulus reached 122.8 MPa and 3521 MPa, respectively. Rorrer et al. introduced biomass-derived mucoacin with poly(ethylene glycol succinate), poly(propylene glycol succinate), poly(butylene succinate), and poly(butylene adipate) via polycondensation reactions into polyesters. Dai et al. added itacin (20 g, 154 mmol) and ethylene glycol (7.76 g, 0.125 mol) in a molar ratio of 1.2:1, p-toluenesulfonic acid-hydrate (0.146 g, 0.5 mol% (based on itacinic acid)) as a prepolymerization catalyst, and 4-methoxyphenol (0.139 g, 0.5 wt% (based on the total amount of itacinic acid and glycol)) as a free radical polymerization inhibitor to a four-necked round-bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, thermometer, reflux condenser, and nitrogen inlet. The mixture was reacted at 160 °C for 2 hours for prepolymerization to form oligomers. Then, 0.028 g of dibutyltin dilaurate (1 wt% relative to the total weight of the reactants) was added as a polycondensation catalyst. After reacting the oligomer at 160°C for 6 hours, it was cooled to 100°C under a vacuum of 0.09-0.095 MPa to obtain the target resin. Applications: Used in the spinning of polyester fibers; ideal colorant for pre-spinning of polyester filaments and staple fibers; widely used in epoxy/polyester blended coatings, providing excellent decorative properties, workability, and storage stability.
