Background
Thirty years after the synthesis of trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane (TMSCF3) in 1984 from CF3Br (an ozone-depleting compound) and trimethylsilyl chloride, various C-CF3 bond formation reactions have been developed from various trifluoromethylating agents. TMSCF3 (Rupert-Prakash reagent) has been and remains an important CF3-centered nucleophilic trifluoromethylating agent.
Introduction
(Trifluoromethyl)trimethylsilane is a colorless, transparent liquid used as a trifluoromethylating agent in the nucleophilic addition reactions of aldehydes and ketones. The application of Rupert-Prakash reagents is now also used to synthesize potassium (trifluoromethyl)trimethoxyborate, well-defined trifluoromethyl copper compounds, trifluoromethanesulfonamides/trifluoromethanesulfonamides for trifluoromethyl thiolation, difluoromethyl trifluoromethanesulfonate as a useful starting material (TMSCF2H) as a suitable source of difluorocarbene (difluoromethyl)trimethylsilane (difluoromethyl)silane for difluoromethylation reactions, and Togni reagents and related species as electrophilic trifluoromethylating agents.
