Introduction
Iridium oxide is a black tetragonal or blue crystal with a rutile-type lattice. The relative density is 3.15. It decomposes when heated to 1100℃. Its hydrate is an indigo blue crystal, and the crystalline water is removed at 350℃. It is slightly soluble in water, and insoluble in acids and bases.
Prepare
by heating iridium powder in air or oxygen to 107℃, or carefully adding strong base to the boiling (IrCl6)2- solution to form a blue precipitate. This precipitate is dried in a vacuum, and then its hydrate is completely dehydrated in nitrogen at 350℃ to obtain the product.
Usage: Used as a spectral pure reagent
Production method: Heating iridium powder in air or oxygen can yield iridium dioxide. Carefully add alkali to the boiling [IrCl6]2- solution until the brown color exactly turns blue. The resulting blue precipitate is dried in pure chemical air to form a blue powder, which is equivalent to Ir(OH)4 or IrO2·2H2O. Heating this powder in nitrogen to 350°C will cause it to completely dehydrate and form black IrO2.
