N-Methylbenzylamine is a colorless or pale yellow liquid at room temperature and pressure. Its iodine-carbon bond is relatively weak and easily broken. Therefore, under certain conditions, 2-iodopropane may undergo unstable reactions leading to deterioration, such as under the influence of heat and light, or alkaline substances. This compound may undergo nucleophilic substitution or elimination reactions. The presence of the methylamine group endows N-methylbenzylamine with a certain degree of basicity, allowing it to react with acids to form salts or salt compounds. Simultaneously, the nitrogen atom has a lone pair of electrons, exhibiting nucleophilicity and reacting with a series of electrophilic reagents to generate corresponding nitrogen-functionalized products. Bioactivity: N-methylbenzylamine is a phenylmethylamine compound. N-methylbenzylamine is found in carrots and can serve as a potential biomarker.

Colorless to pale yellow liquid. Boiling point 184-186℃, relative density 0.9360 (20/4℃), refractive index 1.5210. Flash point 77℃, readily soluble in organic solvents. Has a benzylamine odor.

Pharmaceutical intermediate, organic solvent, also used in dye production and other organic synthesis.
Uses
Used as a pharmaceutical and dye intermediate, produced by reacting benzyl chloride with monomethylamine in benzene solvent. Monomethylamine and benzene are added to a reaction vessel, and benzyl chloride is added dropwise at 25℃, completing the addition in approximately 5-6 hours. The temperature is then raised to 45℃ and reacted for 4 hours. Sodium hydroxide is added, and the mixture is kept at this temperature for another 1 hour. After standing and separating the layers, the benzene layer is distilled at atmospheric pressure to 140℃, then distilled under reduced pressure, collecting the fraction collected at 75-130℃ (2.0-6.67 kPa), which is benzylmethylamine.
